Functions
Selenium protects normal cell function by supporting the body’s natural defenses and scavenging free radicals. It serves as an essential cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, thioredoxin reductase and various selenoproteins that maintain antioxidant defenses. Selenium is also essential for iodine metabolism and thyroid hormone production.
Selenium is required for the production of certain prostaglandins, which promote healthy blood flow. In addition, several clinical trials report that supplementation with selenium provides support for the immune system.
